HAWTHORNE YARDS

Site Map

Proposed for forty-six (46) acres located on the northwest edge of the Town of La Plata, Hawthorne Yards is a 21st century Smart Growth community.  Using compact, environmentally sensitive principles of Smart Growth design, this mixed use community offers shops, services and, recreation within walking distance for its residents.  A diverse range of housing opportunities at Hawthorne Yards awaits a growing community of young professionals and public servants who will be tomorrow’s home owners, safe, maintenance-free living for empty nesters and, a place for our returning military to call home.  In keeping with the Smart Growth goals of sensible and sensitive redevelopment, Hawthorne Yards will preserve a piece of Charles County history.   The American Legion Baseball Field created in 1957 for the Charles-St. Mary’s Baseball League, one of the nation’s oldest leagues, will remain on the site where it will be preserved and improved for future generations of baseball players.

A Sandlot Saga, written by Dr. William Close in 1986 describes the importance of the Charles-St. Mary’s League to the greater community in this way:

“The league has fostered lifelong friendships, provided connections for business opportunities, and encouraged community spirit.  The game has become part of everyone’s life who has participated in the league as a fan, officer, or player.  But the most important contribution of the sandlot game is its greater emphasis on the play-for-fun idea rather than upon winning at all costs.  The pressures placed on all members of our society are indeed numerous and need not be increased by the pressures of play.  The sandlot game of the Charles-St. Mary’s League makes its great contribution to society and to the betterment of the bi-county area by emphasizing the wholesome aspects of the game of baseball.”

What's Planned

A mixed use development to meet the Town’s needs for additional employment opportunities.

The preservation of an important historic and recreational amenity.

A walkable community with a range of housing choices for young professional, public servants, empty nesters and returning military.

An environmentally sensitive, Smart Growth design in keeping with the best development principles for the sustainable communities of the future.

Making Hawthorne Yards A Reality

The first step toward making the vision a reality is to seek and gain approval from the Mayor and Town Council of La Plata to incorporate the site within the boundaries of the Town.  This process, called an annexation, will involve presentations and public hearings first before the La Plata Planning Commission and followed by the La Plata Town Council.  The community’s support of these efforts is critical.  Please feel free contact us for more information or to meet with your group to learn more about this dynamic, new community.
