Ok,I'm bored with winter all ready. My wife told me I was crazy yesterday when I told her I was ready for baseball season to start. She said playing for 3 teams and going to practices was too much. I said that sounds like fun to me! Can we go back to Florida and play again? See you guys in the spring, don't sleep on Western Charles this upcoming season. We got business to take care of this year!

Game of the Year. Not the BEST game of the year, but the most fun to watch. It was what amateur baseball is all about, bunch of guys giving their all in tough conditions like the World Seris was on the line. "D" by Zump, Johnny and Bean, key hits and wild plays. 17-16 with wood bats. Unbelievable. Thanks to both teams for the unforgettable game. Sorry one of you had to be sent home.

OK, before this game re-scheduling thing gets out of hand by people unfamiliar with the situation, the game was requested to be changed early in the season from a request by the Klopfer family(not including Johnny) to not play on that day. It couldn't be worked out, so the game was played as scheduled. Regarding the party, you don't re-schedule baseball games around b-day parties. Baseball is 1st.

I believe we tried to move the game to Saturday knowing there was going to be a surprise B-day party for Johnny K, but Rudy "Cochran" who thinks a baseball field is a way to polish up his skills for the court room denied the change. I would like Dave Cross to look into this. Thank you.

My wife Marci was also very disturbed by what John said as well. I have already heard from Dave who said he will look into the matter. The biggest problem with making statements on a computer is that the reader of the statement has to decide what was meant by it. And that can lead to a lot of problems such as this one. I had to decide what I thought John meant, and I took it as a threat.

If John is upset with me as he said then the last thing I want is to come face to face with him. I apologize to John if he thinks that I was talking about him personally. My statement was purely a general one. I said in my last posting that I have nothing but respect for John as a ballplayer and a man. That's why I was both scared and shocked by what I perceived as being a threat.

Mike, having said that, it would be a sad day if we don't see you at Legion Field. You guys are staples at games and the playoffs and your participation is appreciated and needed. You guys play W.C. next week. Make sure you go and talk to Johnnie face to face. I'm sure you both will find out what great guys you both are and this was all just a message board misunderstanding.

Mike, I must take issue with your interpretation of John's statements. He is now a leader of this league, representing his team at league meetings and events and was in complete agreement with our attempt to watch our language at Legion Field. I believe he would never attack anyone in this league as his love for his team and the league as is apparent. John is a good player and a better person.

This is the first year that I have played in this league, and I have come to love playing baseball again. I enjoy the games, the atmosphere, and especially the people. You have obviously over reacted big time. There is no indication in these messages there was any type of threat toward you. Please step back and look at the big picture. You are posting and reading messages on a website for the Charles-St. Mary's Baseball League in Charles/St. Mary's counties in MD. I think you are safe. Differences of opinion are welcome here, that's part of what this forum is for. Nothing is in the hands of Rudy and Dave. I'm pretty sure they will realize there is no action to take. I hope you will realize that "see ya at the ballfield" is in no way a threat. Think about it, would somebody really get that upset about comments as petty as this to make a physical threat? There was a difference of opinion to your comments, but everything I see is in good nature.

I understand the situation from both points of view and the reaction that occurred. Things were probably not handled in the best way. I also understand the request for a warning, because you can't just sit back and not defend your players. However, an umpire should never issue a warning unless he believes it was intentional and everyone on the field knew that nothing was intentional. It's over now.

I am in no way trying to say that the Western Charles pitcher hit the Combine player intentionally. I'm saying that the umpire in that game failed to take control of that situation. He should have made sure that Combine would not retaliate by issuing warnings to both benches. By not doing that he set the stage for the game to get very ugly. Accidental or deliberate a warning should be issued.

How many times does a pitcher have to hit one batter before a even a warning is given by the umpire? The Combine- Western Charles second game could have gotten very ugly. Incompetent umpiring by not at least issuing a warning to both benches after a player was hit the second time could have resulted in retaliation and brawling if Combine had not decided to do the class thing and not retaliate.

The field umpire is responsible for the 3 bases, except on occassions when the homeplate umpire makes a call at 3rd. The field umpires angles are compromised during certain base running situations due to the fact he has 3 bases to cover. However, at home plate, that is never the case. To miss the obvious, then be talked into conferring with someone 120 ft away is umpire incompetence.

Does that extend to all calls? Balls and strikes? Should we have EVERY call in the field appealed to the other ump by the team on the wrong side of the call? Where does it end? Umpires are taught that unless they really didn't see the play, make the call and stick with it. I belive the worst thing an ump can do is create doubt on all of his calls by asking for help for the tough ones.

Here is the example I will use from my game. There was a base runner at first that took a large lead so my catcher threw it down to first where I sweep the tag way before he touched the bag and he was called safe, now because it was his call and there is no apeal to home. The ump at home told my catcher he was out. That is why they should come together to make the call.

The larger issue here is will the league continue to allow an obviously incompetent umpire who is not even capable of making the most basic of calls (believe me, this was not an isolated incident) to umpire our games? This is not an indictment of umpires in general. It's about rooting our 1 bad apple who is incapable of performing at even a minimal standard of competency.

I really don't want to argue because I wasn't even at the game. And no, I've never seen that situation happen in a Major League game. I was simply stating my opinion that with the umpires we have and the league we play in, I would much rather see the end result be the correct call regardless of how the umpires confer to come to that result. Nobody said they have to confer on every call.

T- You couldn't be more wrong on this issue. Perhaps on every play the two umpires should huddle and make sure they are in complete agreement, regardless of whose call it is. There are certain calls as an umpire you can't ask for help on. Have you ever seen a homeplate umpire in the majors ask the umpire at second base for assistance in making a call at home on a tag play? Didn't think so.

This is not about a bad call. I was out by a year. No one is arguing the point that I was safe. The argument is about following BASIC UMPIRING MECHANICS. Asking for assistance for a play at homeplate(your the homeplate ump) with your partner 120 ft.away from the play, with other baserunners, shows zero baseball umpiring IQ. Not to mention that his partner should have told him so much when asked.

Umpires make bad calls in this league every week and in almost all of the games. It's a way of life in this league. You just have to hope that the bad calls go your way more than the other way. With only two umpires in each game there is always a chance that an umpire will be out of position to make a call. It's almost impossible for only two umpires to cover an entire baseball field.

If one is incompetent, should one be allowed to ever umpire in this league again? Just wonderin'.......Has anyone gotten Zumpano off of The Tan Man's knees yet?

All atheletes like to retire under their own terms. The decision to retire is a very difficult one to make when you have played a sport that you love for many years. I'm sure that Rudy and Billy will both know when it's time for them call it a career. Then and only then will they retire.

Good luck on opening day everybody, and please stop all the madness. Why can't everyone go there seperate way and be done with it? Settle it on the field. Ha

I was a player in the league for Charles and Charlotte Hall from 1974 to 1979. Please tell Bill Chitester and Rudy Carrico hello and that it is time to hang up their spike before they get hurt.

I will update the rosters sometime this week. After they're updated, if you see something that needs to be corrected, you can send me the corrections by using the Feedback/Suggestions link on the left menu. If you want to make life easier for me, you can type up the names of the players on your roster and send it to me using the same link.
